Beautiful rivers and water bodies like Yamuna, Ganga, all polluted and filled with waste of who knows what. The fresh air of the countryside, villages or our hometowns that we so much cherished is not so crispy anymore. The common and major concerns for these pollution are Industrial wastes, Agricultural practices, and Power generating sources.
Factories and power plants release large amounts of pollutants, including NOx, SO2, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and heavy metals into the air while others often discharge similar waste and other pollutants into water bodies, contaminating freshwater sources also.
Agriculture contributes to air pollution through ammonia (NH3) emissions from fertilizers and methane (CH4) emissions from livestock into the air whereas runoff from farms carries fertilizers, pesticides, and animal waste into rivers and lakes, leading to nutrient pollution (eutrophication) and algal blooms.
On the other hand, transportation is also a significant contributor, particularly from vehicles powered by gasoline and diesel engines. Emitting carbon monoxide (CO), NOx, etc. topping it off with traffic congestion which contributes to smog and air quality degradation in urban areas.
There are solutions to all these causes such as shifting towards renewable energy sources, promoting the use of vehicles that are based on principles other than fossil fuels, and adopting a more organic approach to farming. The actual problem is the implementation of these solutions rather than the pollution occurring.
